Ex- National Football League Athlete Antonio Brown Files Innocent Plea in Attempted Murder Trial
Former National Football League wide receiver Antonio Brown is heading to Miami to confront an murder attempt allegation connected with a shooting that occurred in May, as his counsel filing a not guilty plea on his behalf.
Correctional documents in Essex, New Jersey, indicate that Brown was freed on Tuesday morning for his relocation to the state of Florida. Brown, a highly popular players in the NFL, had forgone extradition to Florida from New Jersey, where he was taken after being taken into custody in the city of Dubai.
Brown’s counsel, Mark Eiglarsh, stated in an communication that he has already submitted a written innocent response to the attempted murder charge. Brown could be in a Miami courtroom as early as Wednesday morning for a bail hearing, Eiglarsh added.
As per his apprehension order, Brown is alleged of seizing a handgun from a safety guard after a star fighting contest in May and firing two bullets at a man he had fought with before. The alleged victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told authorities that a bullet touched his neck.
Eiglarsh stated that Brown was simply defending himself from Nantambu.
“The actions he was compelled to take were solely in self-defense against the claimed person’s hostile behavior. Brown was assaulted that night and acted within his legal right to defend himself,” Eiglarsh stated.
Brown was not immediately detained because originally authorities did not identify Nantambu as a victim. It wasn’t until afterward in May that Nantambu provided a detailed statement about the event to authorities and identified Brown as the perpetrator, the affidavit states.
Based on his social media updates, Brown had been residing in Dubai for several weeks. In a post after the confrontation, Brown claimed he was safeguarding himself because he was “attacked by several persons who sought to take my valuables and inflict bodily harm to me.”
A category two murder attempt charge in the state of Florida bears a highest 15-year jail term and up to a $10,000 fine in the event of a guilty verdict.
Brown has encountered multiple legal problems over the period. He before had been alleged of assault of a delivery driver, various family violence charges, failure to pay family payments and other incidents.
In a 2021 season match with Tampa Bay against the New York Jets, Brown stripped off his jersey, equipment and handwear and exited the field, causing his termination by the team and virtually ending his NFL career.
