The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Animated Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance

In this cartoon adventure for preteens, the world of fairies is dedicated to gathering baby teeth of sleeping youngsters and placing gold under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only a bit more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he expected.

An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of teen romance (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people together. The two species as seen here are incredibly similar, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, given to stealing anything they want, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

You won’t find very many children’s animations aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
