The Vast Unknown: Delving into Young Tennyson's Restless Years

Tennyson himself existed as a conflicted spirit. He produced a poem called The Two Voices, where dual versions of the poet debated the merits of suicide. Within this revealing volume, Richard Holmes elects to spotlight on the lesser known character of the poet.

During 1850 proved to be pivotal for Tennyson. He released the monumental poem sequence In Memoriam, on which he had laboured for almost twenty years. If prehistoric creatures had become vanished, then might the human race do so too?

Persistent Elements: Sea Monster and Companionship

Holmes weaves his story together with a pair of persistent themes. The initial he establishes initially – it is the symbol of the legendary sea monster. It’s an picture of delight perfectly suited to FitzGerald’s great exaltation of enjoyment – his interpretation of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. It also evokes the excellent absurdity of the both writers' common acquaintance Edward Lear. It’s pleasing to be informed that Tennyson, the melancholy Great Man, was also the source for Lear’s verse about the old man with a facial hair in which “two owls and a fowl, several songbirds and a small bird” built their dwellings.
